The Short Stack

LIVE/WORK +

The Short Stack House is a model for the live/work typology. Through an understanding of the real, spatial importance of the separatrix between live and work, the Short Stack House makes room for those activities that occur somewhere between our jobs and our homes. The Short Stack House is a place to live, to work and to do just about everything in between.

A major obstacle in any live/work situation is a physical relationship so blurred that one is both “living at work and working at home.” To overcome this common dilemma, the Short Stack House first arranges the live/work program vertically – into a short stack – and then inserts a parlor as a mediating program element. The parlor is physically and programmatically the space between live and work, acting as the connection between living, working and the various combinations of the two. This zone allows both live and work to expand their physical domain as necessary without infringing on the spatial sanctity of the other. At the top of the stack, adjacent to the living level, is the roof garden. Positioned to create private outdoor space with views of the sky, the garden provides a unique space for a variety of passive activities.
